There's been an ongoing controversy over the spud. Currently classified as a vegetable by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for dietary guideline and school lunch program purposes, groups promoting other vegetables wish to change the potato from a vegetable to a grain in the government rulebook.
As with any other aspect of American society, the definition of a potato is a monetary issue. Just as significant is the Orwellian use of linguistics to advance a cultural position. No matter how it's classified, a potato will still be a potato, whether it's called a vegetable, a grain or a rodent.
