Heat Batteries

The latest and most unusual in renewable energy is heat battery technology. In this technique electricity created by wind and solar heats carbon bricks with resistance heaters or even simply the resistance of the  bricks themselves to a an extremely high temperature, higher than 1800 C. This heat is stored in factory-built insulated modules to supply heat for industrial processes such as steel production or, through photovoltaic conversion, release electricity for other industrial purposes.

It appears that Antora Energy, one of the first to attract venture capital interest in this method, has also attracted some heavy-weight investors. They've been joined by  Decarbonization Partners, which includes BlackRock and Temasek.

Connecting the heat batteries to existing industrial infrastructure may be something of a challenge, both technologically and financially. We, and others, will be waiting to see how this all works out.
