Cute Dogs

There's an article in a popular website that describes the wonderful adventure of  a family that makes a nearly 3000 mile round trip to pick up a husky in a dog pound because a deformity to its mouth makes it look like it's always smiling. Apparently that's a good reason for having a particular dog.

The various breeds of dogs were created, like other domestic animals, for certain purposes. In the case of dogs, huskies were bred to pull sleds and travois or carry packs. The varieties of shepherds were used for herding sheep. Greyhounds were coursing dogs that hunted by sight and were able to run down wild game. Other hounds like foxhounds, coon hounds, blood hounds, etc. hunted by scent. Some very popular breeds were retrievers, Labradors and Chesapeakes, for instance.

Few dogs now are "working" dogs. Hunting with hounds is no longer the popular sport it once was in merry old England. In fact, it's illegal. Greyhound racing became a popular pari-mutuel betting subject but is also now illegal practically everywhere in the US. Law enforcement continues to use dogs to search for and capture suspects.

Rather than use dogs for the purpose for which the breeds came to exist, dog owners now want canines to be cute living fashion accessories and household companions. The dogs most in demand are poodle crossbreds with a comical appearance. We live in a strange world.
